The Scotsman ECS 87 AS OX is a self contained undercounter ice maker that makes up to 39kg of clear small gourmet cubes a day at 21°C, or 31kg at 32°C, into a 19kg built in bin. It has a drain pump, so it doesn't need a drain lower than the machine, and the XSafe natural sanitation system. It plugs into a standard 10A power point and sells for $3,350 ex GST. Scotsman ice makers are distributed and serviced in Australia by Moffat, with a 3 year parts and labour warranty.

Best for: bars, clubs and busy cafes going through a lot of mixed drinks, cocktails and soft drinks in tall glasses, using around 30 to 40kg of ice a day, with no floor waste right where the machine needs to go.

ECS 87 AS OX overview

The ECS 87 AS OX is the biggest small cube machine in the Scotsman gourmet range. It makes the same 39kg a day into the same 19kg bin as the ACS 87 AS, and adds the drain pump and XSafe for $260 more. It also sits lower, 825mm on its legs against 875mm.

If you need less ice in a narrower cabinet, the ECS 57 AS OX makes up to 31kg a day, 386mm wide. If you want a bigger medium cube with the same drain pump and XSafe, the ECM 107 AS OX makes up to 51kg a day in the same 531mm width.

How the ECS 87 AS OX makes ice

The ECS 87 AS OX uses Scotsman's horizontal evaporator spray system. Water sprays up into cups on the underside of the evaporator and freezes in layers. Minerals and air stay in the water that doesn't freeze, so the cubes come out clear and hard and melt slowly in a drink.

Each cube is an 8g small gourmet cube, 21mm across and 25mm high. Small cubes pack tight in a tall glass or a jug. Agion Technology in the machine resists the growth of microbes and the development of odours.

XSafe puts an LED UV light in the bin. The light turns the air in the bin ozone rich, and that air works its way through the ice and the whole bin, killing 99% of known viruses and bacteria and cutting down mould, mildew, yeast and slime. The ozone stays in the air, not the water, so there is no taint in the ice. It makes no heat and no noise, and has no moving parts. Read more in our XSafe guide.

Progressive Water Discharge pumps the leftover water out through the drain hose, up to 15 metres. That means the machine doesn't rely on gravity, so the drain can be higher than the machine or further away.

All four are self contained Scotsman gourmet ice makers with a built in bin, 10A plug in and 3 year Moffat warranty. The difference is cube size, output, drain and footprint.

Simple to run

The ECS 87 AS OX runs on simple electromechanical controls, so there is very little to go wrong. A light on the front panel comes on if the machine is due for routine maintenance. The condenser air filter pulls out from the front for washing, so the machine stays where it is. The disappearing bin door opens out of the way and closes softly on a damper.

What is the difference between the ECS 87 AS OX and the ACS 87 AS?
Same 8g small gourmet cube, same 39kg a day at 21°C and 31kg at 32°C, and the same 19kg bin. The ECS 87 AS OX adds the XSafe natural sanitation system and a drain pump that moves water up to 15 metres, so it doesn't need a drain lower than the machine. It also stands 825mm high on its legs against 875mm. The ACS 87 AS drains by gravity and is $260 cheaper.

Does the ECS 87 AS OX have a drain pump?
Yes. The drain pump is built in. Scotsman calls it Progressive Water Discharge, and it pumps the water out through the supplied drain hose up to 15 metres. You don't need a floor waste lower than the machine.

How much ice does the ECS 87 AS OX make?
Up to 39kg a day at 21°C air with 10°C water, and 31kg a day at 32°C air with 21°C water. Use the 32°C figure if your kitchen or bar runs hot in summer. The 19kg bin refills as you use it.

Will the ECS 87 AS OX fit under my bench?
It is 825mm high on its legs, 531mm wide and 600mm deep. Measure the clear height under your bench before you order. If it is tight, the legs can come off to bring it lower. Leave 150mm clear at the back and both sides so the machine can breathe. It runs in air temperatures from 10°C to 43°C.

Do I need a plumber or electrician to install the ECS 87 AS OX?
No. It plugs into a standard 10A power point and connects to a cold water tap with the supplied water hose. The supplied drain hose runs to a floor waste or drain.

What water and drain connection does the ECS 87 AS OX need?
A ¾ inch cold water connection with water between 5°C and 38°C at 100 to 500kPa. The drain pump, or pump out drain, moves water up to 15 metres through the drain hose, so the drain can be higher than the machine or further away.

What is XSafe?
XSafe is Scotsman's natural sanitation system. An LED UV light in the bin makes the air ozone rich, and that air kills 99% of known viruses and bacteria through the ice and bin. It doesn't filter your water or stop scale, so you still need filtered water, descaling and a full bin clean from time to time. Our XSafe guide covers it in full.

What is the difference between small and medium gourmet cubes?
The small gourmet cube in the ECS 87 AS OX is 8g, 21mm across and 25mm high. The medium gourmet cube in machines like the ECM 107 AS OX is 20g, 30mm across and 34mm high. Small packs tighter into tall glasses and jugs. Medium suits spirits, cocktails and soft drinks in a standard glass.

How do I look after the ECS 87 AS OX?
Pull the condenser air filter out from the front and wash it regularly, more often in a greasy or dusty kitchen. A light on the front panel comes on if the machine is due for routine maintenance. Have a technician replace the XSafe LED every 12 months so it stays covered by the warranty. Regular cleaning and descaling are part of normal maintenance and aren't covered by warranty.

What comes with the ECS 87 AS OX?
The machine comes on legs, with a removable air filter, an ice scoop, a water hose and a drain hose. A castor kit and adjustable feet are available as optional extras.

Do you have scratch and dent ECS 87 AS OX machines?
Sometimes. Moffat occasionally has units with freight damage or ex-display stock at a lower price. It comes down to availability, so ask us if you want one.
